Who are you? No, really—who are you? Are you the person God says you are, or are you still carrying the labels others have put on you? Are you walking in your new identity, or are you still answering to the names of your past?
In Mark 14, we meet Simon the Leper—but here’s something to think about: if he still had leprosy, he wouldn’t have been hosting dinner. He wouldn’t have been around people at all. That means he had been healed, restored, and made whole. But what did people still call him? Simon the Leper.
That’s what the world does. It defines you by what you used to be, by your mistakes, your failures, your worst moments. Even when God has done something new in your life, some people will still try to attach old labels to you.
But here’s the truth: you are not your past. You are not your failures, your regrets, or the things people whisper when your name comes up. Your past may be part of your story, but it does not define your future.
Imagine if instead of Simon the Leper, people called him Simon the Healed. Simon the Restored. Simon the Free.
The same goes for you. You don’t have to live under the weight of old names. God calls you forgiven, redeemed, chosen, and set apart (Ephesians 1:4-7). He doesn’t see you as broken—He sees you as whole. He doesn’t see you as worthless—He sees you as His child.
So, who are you? Are you still answering to the wrong name? Still believing the lies? Still carrying the shame of something that Jesus already took off of you?
It’s time to let go of the labels that don’t belong to you anymore. Stop responding to the wrong name. Walk in the new identity He has given you.
2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV):
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
Isaiah 43:18-19 (NIV):
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
1. What labels from your past have you struggled to let go of?
2. How has God changed you, and what new identity has He given you?
3. Are there lies or names you’ve been believing that don’t align with who God says you are?
4. What would it look like for you to fully embrace your identity in Christ?
Reflect and Write:
Praise: Thank God for giving you a new identity and setting you free from your past.
Confess: Be honest about any labels or lies you’ve believed about yourself.
Ask: Pray for the strength to walk boldly in your new identity and stop responding to the wrong name.
Father, I don’t want to live under the weight of my past any longer. I know You have made me new. Help me to stop believing the lies and to fully embrace who You say I am. Thank You for Your grace, Your love, and the identity You have given me in Christ. I choose to walk in the new name You’ve given me today. Amen.
